Artistic Culture

Traditional crafts and artistic expressions passed down through generations

The Mangyan artistic heritage spans centuries, encompassing intricate weaving, expressive poetry, and symbolic crafts that tell stories of their relationship with nature and spirit world.

Traditional Art Forms:

  • Weaving: Complex patterns using natural fibers and dyes
  • Poetry: Rhythmic oral traditions passed down through generations
  • Crafts: Bamboo construction and beadwork with spiritual significance
  • Script: Surat Mangyan - Ancient syllabic writing system

Surat Mangyan

Ancient Writing System

The Surat Mangyan is one of the few remaining indigenous writing systems in the Philippines. This unique syllabic script, developed by the Hanunuo Mangyan, consists of 18 symbols representing syllables rather than individual letters.

Originally carved into bamboo using knives, the script was traditionally used for:

  • Recording poetry and songs
  • Documenting customary laws
  • Writing letters and messages
  • Creating ambahan (poetic compositions)

Today, this ancient script is being preserved and adapted for modern use while maintaining its cultural significance.
